Landscaping around the relocated Boer War monument could cost the Waitaki District Council about $52,000.
The monument intersection at Thames-Severn-Coquet Sts in central Oamaru has been redesigned as part of a $3.1 million safety project on State Highway 1 undertaken by the New Zealand Transport Agency. The monument was moved about 40m south.
Now work is nearing completion, the council's assets committee is considering landscaping. Engineering officer Kushla Morgan will ask the committee, at its meeting on Tuesday, to fund a project from the Oamaru town-centre upgrade budget, money set aside from 2006 to upgrade Thames St.
The council has about $17,600 left in the budget this year. It proposes using what remains, plus about $34,400 from the next financial year's budget.
