Oamaru's redeveloped Opera House will play a new role next month when it becomes the venue for a "Great Trash 'n' Treasure Sale".
The sale, in which anyone can set up a stall, is part of the lead-in events to the Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebrations and will use most of the space in the Opera House.
Marketing and sales manager Stu Dalton said it could become a regular event, depending on the response to the inaugural sale.
"It is a different use of the Opera House - part of the hope to have it as a community place, not just for shows and conferences," Mr Dalton said.
"A hundred years ago, the Opera House was used as a community facility." he said.
The sale, on November 14 between 9am and 4pm, will give people the chance to dispose of unwanted items while making some money.
Stalls cost $10 to cover costs, but stallholders keep all the money they make.
Anything not sold can be given to charity, and the Opera House will arrange for it to be collected.
Stalls will be spread throughout the building and the hope is to concentrate like items and stalls in the same rooms - for example, clothing in the Empire Room.
Outdoor items will be displayed outdoors.
Registration forms are available from the Opera House or on its website.
