Insulation plan investigated

Waitaki district homes may become made warmer, more energy-efficient and healthier, with the Waitaki District Council working on a joint-venture with two electricity companies.

The Government launched a new home insulation and heating programme in May, planning to spend $323 million over four years to fit homes with insulation and efficient heating devices such as heat pumps.

Access to the scheme has been an issue in the Waitaki district because there has not been an approved agency for it, and the council has been working to introduce the programme.

Council chief executive Michael Ross has discussed the issue with Network Waitaki, the North Otago community-owned power lines company, and Meridian Energy Ltd and its subsidiary, Powerhouse.

Further developments were likely in a few months, he said.
