Work to repair Holmes Wharf at Oamaru Harbour will start this week.
The damage was mostly caused by vehicles on the wharf.
Carpenters hired by the Waitaki District Council will fix holes and replace decking.
Repairs will only be carried out to the most urgent areas, including where there is a risk to the public.
The work is expected to take two weeks, but the timeframe will not be clear until some of the decking timber has been lifted and the full extent of the damage assessed.
The council will replace the timber with Australian hardwood decking timber.
The Historic Places Trust has been informed of the work.
There will be some disruption to the regular use of the wharf.
The council is proposing to spend up to $200,000 on the wharf in the next financial year to improve its viability for commercial use.
