Teenage golfer Zain Pennycook was given a second-hand ball that his coach, Stephen Waby, said would perform better during his round in the men's Wednesday competition at the Lower Waitaki Golf Club.

The Titleist had the number 1 stamped in red - and it lived up to its rating 17 holes later on Wednesday when Zain (13) scored his first hole in one after playing golf for only nine months.

In doing so, he beat his father, Alastair, who has never scored an ace in the for 17 years he has been playing.

Zain is believed to be the youngest golfer to score a hole in one at Lower Waitaki.

Mr Waby suggested he would like the ball back, but it is going to be mounted on a hole in one trophy and presented to Zain.

Zain started playing in late October on a 40 handicap, is now down to a 24 and challenging his father's 17.

On Wednesday, Zain reached the difficult 160m-long par 3 17th, pulled out a 3 wood and hit the ball on to the green. He and fellow golfers did not see where it went.

When Zain got to the bowl-shaped green, he could not see his ball and thought it had run through the back. Mr Waby pulled the pin out and the ball popped out.

Zain's name will go on the club's honours board and the club shouted the bar to honour the feat.

"I had a Coke," Zain said.
