The brigade was sent to a Kurow property just after 2pm.
Brigade chief John Sturgeon said the crew took about three-quarters of an hour to put the fire out using about 8000 litres of water.
Describing the size of the blaze, he said there were four bales per metre.
It was believed the fire started when someone decided to burn rubbish. The wind strengthened and blew embers to the nearby hay bales.
He said there was no risk to life or other property.
Mr Sturgeon said people needed to be very careful lighting fires, permits must be obtained and conditions of those permits met.
The person that lit the fire was spoken to about their actions and told the officer in charge of the fire response that he did have a permit to burn the rubbish.
``They're probably thinking at this moment it was a silly thing to do,'' Mr Sturgeon said.
``A warning here: don't light fires in the open near hay stacks.''
