Traffic on SH1 at Maheno, 13km south of Oamaru, was disrupted for more than an hour after a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a crash this morning.

The 38-year-old motorcyclist was heading south when he collided with the right rear of a car which was slowing to turn off SH1 into Kakanui Valley Rd at about 10am.

The motorcyclist veered across the north bound lane, fell off with his Harley Davidson ending up over a bank about 40m from the initial impact.

He was flown to Dunedin Hospital just before 11am by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter.

The driver of the car was not injured.

SH 1 was reduced to one lane, then traffic had to be diverted for about half an hour after the helicopter landed on SH 1.
