Gardens closed for night shoot

Rabbits are the focus of a night shoot in the Oamaru Public Gardens next week.

A contractor has been employed by the Waitaki District Council to eradicate rabbits in the gardens on the Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The gardens will be closed between 6pm and 6am for the shoot. Community constable Bruce Dow said all entrances would have signs warning people to keep out.

Night shoots are held about once a year. This year the contractor will be using a .22 rifle.

Const Dow said police had not been contacted by nearby residents who had heard rifle shots from the gardens during previous shoots.
