Pupils at Maheno School walked to the nearby Kakanui River on Friday - not to catch fish, but to put fish into the river.

The chinook salmon eggs, which were sourced from Fish and Game in North Canterbury, were hatched at the school, in a project which intrigued the 47 pupils.

From about 200 eggs, about 100 fry were released, after Fish and Game Kurow-based officer Graeme Hughes spoke to the children about salmon.

Principal Murray Nelson hopes to repeat the project, using more sophisticated equipment.

The eggs arrived in June and it took several weeks before the children arrived at school to find the water had frothed up and the eggs had hatched.

The fry did not require feeding for the first month, and they were then fed twice daily with special salmon fish food.
