St Patrick's Church has a double celebration coming up - 100 years to the day it was opened and completion of a nine-year, $600,000 restoration project.

The Waimate church has organised celebrations on two Sundays.

There will be a concert tomorrow and a special church service, followed by a civic luncheon, the following Sunday.

The chairman of the centenary and restoration committees, John Foley, said the restoration project was being completed this week, with the painting of the interior and the returning of restored and cleaned statues to their niches in the church.

"The project has been well blessed and it is a wonderful coincidence that we complete the restoration and celebrate the centenary at the same time.

"We're very proud of what has been done and we are entering a new era of using the church as a multipurpose building for the benefit of the district," he said.

That will be demonstrated with the concert tomorrow at 2pm, which will feature soprano Lois Johnston, the 50-piece Christchurch Youth Orchestra and the St Kevins College choir.

On Sunday, October 25, a pont-ifical high mass will be held, with the Bishop of Christchurch, the Most Rev Barry Jones, and Bishop of Dunedin, the Most Rev Colin Campbell, replicating what happened 100 years ago when the church was opened on that date in 1909.

That will be followed by a civic luncheon in the St Patricks Hall, an occasion to recognise the completion of the restoration.

The project started in 2000 with a conservation report on the imposing stone and brick church at the northern entrance to Waimate's main street.

The first two stages included bracing and strengthening the church, a new roof, cleaning and repairing the exterior.

The final stage was the restoration and repainting of the interior, with new heating and lighting.
