The Waitaki District Council could install a waste disposal station for campervans and caravans in Humber St - the first publicly available facility in Oamaru for decades.
Disposal stations are available at camping grounds, and one that had been in Dee St was closed.
The council has investigated a number of sites and its assets committee will today consider whether to approve a site just north of the Oamaru Railway Station on the east side of Humber St near Usk St.
The proposal follows discussions with the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association on the best site.
The association has donated a waste disposal unit and signage.
The council set aside $10,000 to complete a project which had been proposed for several years.
The council's roading engineering officer, Kushla Morgan, said three options were considered - two in Humber St or looking for another site.
The proposed site in Humber St was the cheapest and simplest to install of the options and was estimated to cost $9500.
The waste station could be completed in time for the peak of the tourist season.
It would be well signposted from State Highway 1, and large vehicles would be able to use it.
Tourists would be drawn off the main highway into the business and foreshore area, potentially increasing trade compared with locating the waste station in outlying industrial areas such as Regina Lane.
