A play illustrating some of the consequences of teenage binge drinking will premiere at Waitaki Boys High School next Thursday night.

It has been written by Waitaki Girls High School pupils Nicky Fisher and Courtney Smith, as part of a pro-active approach the North Otago community is taking to binge drinking and associated behaviour.

Tickets are available at the three Oamaru secondary schools and it is planned to have some discussion with the audience at the conclusion of the play.

The play, which starts at 7.30pm, will later be performed to pupils at Waitaki Boys, Waitaki Girls and St Kevins College.

Former All Black Norm Hewitt will come to Oamaru next month to speak on the issue at a public forum at Waitaki Girls High School on July 1.

He will also speak to pupils at the three secondary schools and attend the annual Waitaki Boys-St Kevins College rugby clash on July 3.

Waitaki community safety co-ordinator Alison Banks said Hewitt was coming to Oamaru to act as a lever to assist with the initiatives already in place against alcohol-related harm.
