Holcim (New Zealand) Ltd has been ordered by the Environment Court to pay $2493 in costs to the Waitaha Trust Board after the cement company failed in an attempt to stop Waitaha from involvement in an appeal against the proposed Weston cement plant.
Waitaha wanted to be a party to the Environment Court appeal by the Waiareka Valley Preservation Society, which opposes the $300 million cement plant being built in the Waiareka Valley.
Holcim disputed whether Waitaha could join the society's appeal, but in July the court ruled it could.
The appeal is against the Waitaki District Council and Otago Regional Council granting resource consents for Holcim to proceed with the development, one of two options it is considering to meet a growing demand for cement in New Zealand.
After winning the right to appear, Waitaha filed a claim for costs, which Judge Jon Jackson has awarded.
The claim was not opposed by Holcim.
Appeals against the cement plant are expected to be heard in March or early April next year.
