Held by the Rotary Club of Waitaki to raise funds for community projects, the event is in its third year. An increase in the number of entries was expected this year as it continued to grow, event organiser Ralph Burrell said.
Last year's event attracted 30 entries from as far away as Bluff and Christchurch.
Mr Burrell said this week he had had many more inquiries this year about entering the mud plug, held on Tim Fox's property north of Maheno, starting at 10am. They included two 4WD Ladas.
"You'll be surprised where they can go, providing they keep going," he said of the Russian-made vehicles, the butt of many jokes.
Last year's event was preceded by a week of heavy rain. This year, the winter has been relatively dry.
There was plenty of mud in the 10 hazards vehicles had to negotiate, he said, but to make sure it stayed that way he had two tankers organised, one with about 2000 litres of water and the other with 7000 litres.
