Closing Haven St, the main route into Moeraki, is not on the Waitaki District Council's agenda.
Instead, it is looking at options to retain Haven St, despite a decades' old problem of the road slipping away.
A petition signed by 447 people had called on the council to keep Haven St open, but yesterday asset group manager Neil Jorgensen said closing it was no longer an option.
The council had looked into several options over recent years to resolve the issue of portions of Haven St slumping because of movement underneath it.
Those portions were narrow and shingle-covered.
The rest of the street was sealed.
Initially, closing Haven St and using Tenby St with a new link to the Moeraki foreshore was considered.
However, that had proved too costly.
The council is now looking at two options and staff were preparing a report for the Waihemo Community Board and the council's assets committee.
The first option, which could cost up to $630,000, was to drain sections of Haven St to slow the slips.
Mr Jorgensen said technical investigations had identified that water under the surface was causing the ground to slip, similar to the slumping on the Kilmog on State Highway 1 north of Dunedin.
Draining the area would slow slippage, but investigations were continuing into how cost-effective that would be.
The second was to do nothing, except continue to maintain Haven St, repairing and resurfacing it when it slumped.
Once staff had prepared a report on the proposal, they would be asking for feedback from the Waihemo board.
But Mr Jorgensen was adamant the council was not closing Haven St.
