The marquee is up and the horse paddocks ready as Oamaru prepares to welcome the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust's cavalcade today.

About 500 riders, walkers and wagoners will converge on the Oamaru race-course for a parade at noon, having started out from various parts of South Canterbury and Otago.

There will also be a family fun festival to mark the arrival of the Stake Ya Claim in Oamaru cavalcade, with stalls and live entertainment throughout the day.

There will be a parade of vintage motorcycles too.

Members of the New Zealand Motorhome Association attend the event every year, attracting a large number of campervans.

Yesterday, cavalcade co-ordinator Terry Davis said he was "very happy" with how the cavalcade had gone.

He had expected the weather during the past week to have been quite a bit worse - "I think we've got off lightly" - and was hoping for a fine day today.

The Host Town committee had put in a lot of effort preparing for the finale and he was looking forward to the day.

A hoe-down will be held in the marquee tonight.
