Burned-out car may be involved in fatal crash: police

Police investigating a fatal crash near Pukeuri, in South Canterbury, yesterday want to hear from anyone who saw a Nissan Skyline on the road between Oamaru and Christchurch yesterday morning.

The Nissan Skyline was found burnt out on Horse Gully Road, 15km inland from the scene of the crash, in which an 18-year-old South Canterbury man was killed.

"We're working on establishing who owns the car and are interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen it travelling on SH1 in the Richmond/Papakaio (Oamaru) between 3.30am and 4.30am yesterday morning," Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Blackie said.

Police would not comment on any possible link between the two scenes.

"It's possible that this car was involved in some way, and we would like any one who knows of a person or people who may been on the road in this make and model car around this time to contact Oamaru Police on (03) 433 1400.

A scene examination at this site by a specialist crash investigation team is expected to be completed later today.

Specialist crash investigators are also continuing to examine the scene where the motorcyclist died and this scene examination is also expected to be completed later this afternoon.
