A 21-year-old man has died after being thrown out of his car in a crash in Woolston, Christchurch, this morning.
Police said the car collided with a lamppost after the driver lost control on Ferry Rd, just before 2am.
The vehicle appeared to have been speeding prior to the crash, police said.
A female occupant, who was wearing a seat belt, received minor injuries, while the driver died as a result of injuries sustained.
Police and the Serious Crash Unit are investigating.
Meanwhile, a German woman has become the second person to die following a head-on crash between a car and a campervan on the West Coast.
Emergency services were called to the collision on the Haast Highway between Lake Paringa and Lake Moeraki at about 4pm yesterday.
An 82-year-old man died at the scene.
Police today confirmed the 53-year-old woman had also died on her way to hospital.
St John Ambulance yesterday said a man in his 40s was flown to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition with suspected pelvic injuries after the crash.
Another person, whose age and gender were yet to be confirmed, was flown to Grey Base Hospital in a serious condition with shoulder and leg injuries.
A serious crash investigation team was at still the scene.
Police were looking to speak to the driver of a white bus who may have been first to the crash site.
The holiday road toll currently stands at 11. The road toll period began at 4pm on December 23 and ends at 6am on January 4.
At the same time last year, the road toll stood at five.
