Labour Weekend will be no holiday for Waimate Historical Society volunteers, who are running a big book sale to help keep the town's museum going for the next 12 months.
Society members Bobbie Laurie and helpers have been putting out the thousands of books in the Machinery Hall behind the museum to get ready for the annual Bookarama which starts on Saturday and finishes on Thursday.
Last year, the sale raised about $13,000, money used by the society to help pay operating costs for the Waimate Museum.
This year, stocks were boosted by a large donation from an estate, and included framed prints of ships.
Among those is a set of prints of the sailing ship Pamir and a book on the ship's history, which Mrs Laurie said would probably sell as a lot.
Book prices start from $1, but rarer items may cost up to $100, based on a valuer's recommendations.
