The Rotary Club of Oamaru’s second-hand book fundraiser opened to hundreds yesterday, who squashed into the former Noel Lemming building in Thames St.
Volunteer Jacquie Webby said there were more than 10 people on the floor at all times "constantly" restocking books.
"We’re very happy with how it’s gone."
The customers had been constant and it was going "wonderfully".
People had travelled from out of town for the event, including a book dealer from near Christchurch.
About 50 queued up in front of the building in the leadup to the 10am opening and hundreds had come in within a few minutes.
Items had sold well from across the board with particularly good success in the children’s books section.
"Virtually everything’s had a great response," she said.
Money raised from the event will go towards fundraising grants throughout the year.
Previous projects that received funds from the Bookarama include the new Oamaru Public Garden’s playground, a chemotherapy chair for Oamaru Hospital and courses for students.
All books are donated from around the community.
The Bookarama is open until next Sunday with varying hours. It is open from 10am to 4pm today.
