Women's Institute members from across Otago gathered yesterday to support the six members of the Alexandra Women's Institute, as the small branch of the organisation celebrated 80 years of friendship, kindness and hospitality.

Alexandra WI president Anita Willems thanked all who attended on behalf of the "very enthusiastic little group".

The eldest member of the Alexandra group, Doreen Green (94), joined the WI in 1979.

"I wasn't a member at first - I was just asked to be a conductor for the choir - but I liked it so much that I joined the group," she said.

A highlight for her was when her 18-member choir was selected as one of the top two to compete at a national competition in Wellington, where she led the group in singing Let There Be Peace and Getting to Know You, she said.

The WI was great company and she enjoyed the sewing and craft as well as the choir, Mrs Green said.
