Firefighters attended a small scrub fire near Alexandra this afternoon.A fire broke out on McPherson Rd about 2pm, near the Road Metals Earnscleugh Quarry. Quarry workers went to scene immediately and started stripping the ground with a front end loader.
Two fire engines from Alexandra, a rural fire engine and a rural tanker from Clyde were called to the scene about 2.06pm.
By the time the first appliance arrived, the fire was out and the other appliances were called off.
The fire was about 20m by 20m.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand senior fire officer Clayton Andrews was at the scene and said the fire service were only "mopping up hotspots.''
The cause of the fire was unknown, but he wanted to remind people that long days and hot conditions would make fire breakouts more likely, he said.
Firefighters left the scene about 2.40pm.
