Alexandra’s schools have joined forces to perform a musical due to hit the stage this month.

About 40 performers from Alexandra’s three primary schools and high school will take part in Oliver!, held in the Alexandra Memorial Theatre.

Director Nick Meissel said it was the first time he had directed a musical with such a wide range of ages.

Children from 7 to 18 were taking part, giving older students a chance to show leadership skills.

"They’re good with the other kids," he said.

"It’s also a nice way for the [year] 7 and 8s to connect with the high school," he said.

Mr Meissel had wanted to stage Oliver! for a long time but said it needed the right group of performers.

"With any of these kind of things, the stars need to align."

Oliver! is loosely based on the Charles Dickens’ book Oliver Twist, and follows a young orphan’s misadventures in Victorian London.

"He’s just like all of us in life — he’s trying to find someone to love him," Mr Meissel said.

Angus Keene played Oliver and while the role had been quite hard, "I’ll get there if I practise a lot", he said.

The show had been rehearsed since the beginning of term 2 and about 10 students would be helping with lights, sounds and backstage tasks.
