Almost 100 people braved the nose-numbing night to tap their toes to Arthur's bass-baritone melodies under the giant Maniototo rugby jersey. Cheering loudly they demanded: "Give us another" and "Encore". Arthur sang seven songs before the crowd retreated back into the warmth of the pubs to catch the New Zealand v Japan Rugby World Cup game.
He began with a Michael Buble number, followed by show tunes including I Got Plenty of Nothing, Some Enchanted Evening and Ol' Man River, which he said he used to sing in his rugby days.
Ranfurly shops opened for late-night shopping, a first for the town since the late 1970s, but there weren't many people out shopping. Amy Hope, of The Hair Studio, said late-night shopping was "definitely something we are going to push for for summer".
