Classrooms are out and multi-purpose, versatile learning spaces are in at the Alexandra Primary School, which is set to use $645,000 of government money to rebuild a classroom block.
Board of trustees chairman Shane Crawford spoke to the Otago Daily Times before a board meeting in Alexandra last night where initial plans for the development were announced.
Mr Crawford said a project manager had been appointed for the development and would tender for construction once the final details of the rebuilding had been decided.
"We are not yet sure what the build will constitute. There will definitely be some versatile learning spaces included, as we don't want to build a classroom that can't be used for anything else,'' he said.
Late last year, Mr Crawford said it was possible three or four individual learning spaces could be designed to open out to one another, forming a larger communal space which could be used as a school hall.
"The project manager will seek feedback from the school community as to what they would like to see as part of that space. Following that... concept plans [will be] established and those will be available for our wider school community to see for further feedback,'' he said.
Last November, the Ministry of Education granted the school $645,000 to demolish and rebuild a classroom block built in 1939.
The block was in disrepair and had either been kept empty or used to store resource materials.
The school had not initially qualified for a refurbishment grant, but eventually did for a rebuild.
The new block had to be about the same size as the existing building but could be designed to include learning spaces, administration, communal areas, and storage.
