Nicole Carran (17), of Cromwell, left school to buy her parents' fish, chip and ice cream shop, Shark and Taties.

"I was doing seventh form [year 13], but I wasn't really interested.

Then my parents decided to put the shop on the market. I asked them if they would sell it to me and they were more than happy to do it.

"I never had any plans to do anything else, but I knew I didn't want to work for anyone, so business was maybe in the back of my mind."

Miss Carran had worked at Shark and Taties for a year and at her parents' other shop, the Jollys Road Foodcentre, for three years, so she has had experience in the field, but she said it was more work than anticipated.

"I thought I could just breeze in and it would all be OK, just like an employee ... the first month was very stressful, but it is starting to get easier.

"It is a bit strange and nerve-wracking being in charge. I employ three part-timers and I've always bossed people around, but it is a bit strange."

The eldest of Miss Carran's staff is only a couple of months her junior.

She said people were surprised, but supportive.

"Everyone's mouths just kind of dropped, because I was never a very good student. So they were quite surprised, but they wanted to support me."

"My Mum and stepdad [who sold her the business] were stoked; and Dad was stunned, but he thinks it is an amazing opportunity.

"At the moment Mum helps me with the books, because it is a lot to take over all at once. I'm pretty much starting from scratch, because I didn't do any economics or anything at school."

Miss Carran took over the business on June 1 and started working there full-time a month before that.
