The new owners of Olivers Restaurant and Lodge in Clyde feel a sense of responsibility to bring the business back to life.

David and Andrea Ritchie, of Auckland, took possession of the landmark property this week.

Mr Ritchie has already moved in.

He will be joined by his wife in a few weeks.

The complex is on a 0.4ha section which borders Clyde's main street and the buildings, which are classified as Category 1 by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, date to the 1860s.

The buildings include stables, the former restaurant building, a barn, main house and servants quarters.

The last business on the site closed in March 2007 and the Ritchies are the sixth owners in 12 years.

"Our aim is to develop a commercial enterprise here and bring it back to life and preserve it, so the buildings are still here in another 130 years' time," Mr Ritchie said.

He declined to reveal how much the couple paid for the complex or how much money they planned to invest in development.

Mr Ritchie was born in Waimate and lived in Dunedin and Canterbury before shifting to Auckland.

The couple had strong links with Central Otago and enjoyed winter sports, especially skiing, he said.

"We're regular visitors to Central Otago and love old buildings and heritage things like this.

"I don't think I've seen any series of buildings as beautiful as these," Mr Ritchie said.

Mrs Ritchie has recently completed a fine arts degree at Elam School of Fine Arts, while Mr Ritchie has an extensive business background.

He worked overseas for Shell Oil, in marketing and in sales and finance.

"Buying this complex represents a complete change of lifestyle for us and a very welcome one," he said.

"Our first aim is to develop a commercial enterprise along the lines of accommodation, reasonably high-class accommodation, followed at some stage by a restaurant and cafe."

The couple planned to work with the community and the historic places trust.

They were making no promises about the scope of the redevelopment or the timeframe, but knew the site was an important one in the town and residents were keen to see a thriving business operating there.

"Already we've had a couple of approaches from people who want to use the grounds for their weddings.

"Everyone seems to have good memories of this place, so that's nice to know there's still so much goodwill attached to it."

The couple have two children - Edward (17), who is remaining in Auckland to complete his high school education this year, and Charlotte (20), who is overseas studying hotel management and hospitality.

Olivers was founded by Fleur Sullivan in 1981.

She established the restaurant first and then the lodge, selling the business in 1997.

The Ritchies bought Olivers from Doug and Lianne Bickley.

The Bickleys bought the complex in February 2008 for an undisclosed sum, after it was passed in at auction for $1.625 million.
