With a "remote" flick of the switch, helped by a Delta Utilities senior engineer with a cellphone, Central Otago Mayor Malcolm Macpherson lit up the piers last night.
The public had been invited, and the occasion was celebrated by a crowd of 50.
The lights, which are installed on the main bridge to display the well-known structures in Alexandra, are the initiative of a group which had been looking at how to showcase the piers for some time.
All their hard work came to fruition last night.
Long-time Central Otago resident Graeme Anderson said it was appropriate the piers were brought into focus, as they were among the most magnificent structures in the country, he said.
Dr Macpherson said there were not many public resources in Alexandra that were as visible and important to the public as the piers.
They are the remains of the original Alexandra bridge, which was completed in 1882.
