The date of this year's Alexandra's Blossom Festival could be changed, but opinion on the proposal so far is mixed.

The blossom festival committee posted yesterday on its Facebook page a message about a ''dilemma'' surrounding the event's date, and asked for feedback from the general public.

The post said the festival was traditionally held on the fourth Saturday in September, which this year would be September 23.

However, that date clashed with the general election.

The blossom festival opening weekend was also normally the first weekend of the school holidays, but this year the school holidays do not start until September 30.

The committee is considering changing the opening date of the festival and street procession from September 23 to September 30.

Comments on the festival's Facebook page were mixed. Most were in favour of changing the date to September 30, with some saying the event needed to be held on the first weekend of the school holidays to ensure good crowd numbers.

However, others were concerned about the impact a change of date would have on events held after the festival, such as shearing and soccer.

The organisers of the Port Chalmers Seafood Festival also said they had confirmed their festival date as September 30 after talking to blossom festival organisers, so as to avoid a clash of dates, as had occurred last year.
