Wet, cold weather made its presence felt throughout Central Otago, affecting the Rural Art Deco Maniototo event.
While many locals dressed for the conditions by donning raincoats, gumboots and carrying umbrellas, it was visitors from throughout the lower South Island who proved fashion could be practical.
Couples, families and friends from Timaru, Mosgiel, Dunedin, and Gore made the journey to Ranfurly for the ninth annual event, which was moved indoors due to the unseasonal weather.
Rather than sweating in their full-length faux fur coats set off by hats and gloves, this year's Art Deco enthusiasts were glad of the warm clothing.
Some Maniototo residents also dusted off their 1930s gear, men wearing full three-piece suits and top hats and women sporting colourful creations.
Ranfurly resident Amie Pont managed to incorporate gumboots into her Art Deco ensemble.
The notion that less is more was out of place, with frills, pearls, feathers, and beads dominating costumes.
Despite cloud, rain and wind, the event comprising market stalls, live entertainment, high tea and a picnic, as well as a fashion parade and vintage car show, soldiered on.
A Dunedin magician entertained children and adults who were packed to capacity into Forrys Cafe and Bar, forcing people to spill into the street.
The Ranfurly Lion Hotel hosted a high tea and balcony picnic, after which a fashion parade was held inside Forrys Cafe.
People then prepared themselves for the evening cabaret at the Ranfurly Town Hall.
Organisers are promising an even bigger and better event for next year's 10th anniversary celebrations.
