One of the busiest tennis spots in the Central Otago district is one step closer to an upgrade, after the Vincent Community Board approved a large grant.

Clyde Tennis Club, in Sunderland St, plans to upgrade its court surfaces and install LED lighting so play can continue when darkness falls.

At its meeting this week, the Vincent Community Board approved a $50,000 grant for the club to help with lighting installation costs.

Clyde Tennis Club tennis court upgrade working committee member Mike Cook said the court had not been upgraded since the mid 1990s and never had lighting.

Because of change in people's lifestyles, the club considered upgrades necessary.

"We've recognised that society's changed. The weekend doesn't work for everyone."

Lighting would allow people to play at all times of the year, especially in the evenings for those who could not play at the weekends in the day, Mr Cook said.

He expected the month's work to begin in September.

The courts would be closed over that time but people could use other courts around the district.

The upgrade would cost $180,000 in total.

The club had raised $30,000 through activities such as coaching and firewood fundraisers.

They expected to raise the other $100,000 for the upgrade from other community grants from organisations such as the Otago Community Trust and the Central Lakes Trust.

The club was established in 1877 and is one of the oldest in New Zealand.

Mr Cook said it was the only formally established tennis club in Central Otago.

The board grant was from the Earnscleugh-Manuherikia Rural Land Subdivision Fund.

A report by Central Otago District Council property and facilities manager Mike Kerr said the fund was accumulated through financial contributions from the subdivision of land.
