$2 charge for hot showers at camp

Hot showers at the Clyde camping and sporting complex now cost $2, with a new gas water heating system installed.

The old system, which used diesel boilers, was not up to the standards required by the Environmental Risk Management Authority (Erma), which required camp owners Ken and Lauren Direen to get rid of it.

They installed the gas system at Labour Weekend and Mr Direen said it seemed to be working well.

The $2 shower lasts eight minutes, Mr Direen said.

The money goes towards operating and equipment costs.

Water meters have also been installed at the camp as part of the Central Otago District Council plan for future years.

"We're not being charged for our water yet, but this shower system of paying will also help conserve water and that can only be a good thing," Mr Direen said.
