They started out strong, and made a fast finish.
''We were 100% - right from the word go,'' family sulky derby winning team member Richard Harley, of Geraldine, said.
''We were strong right from the start,'' fellow team member Arran Walker, of Dunedin, said.
But it was humans racing, not horses.
The family sulky derby at the Central Otago Trotting Club's Omakau Trots was gaining in profile and was now a popular part of the race programme, club president Graham Sinnamon said. The race covered 100m of grass track in front of the race crowd.
All Mr Harley's 7-year-old daughter Harriet had to do in the race was ''hold on'', but it got ''a little bit bumpy'', she said.
The group beat eight other teams to win the title in the derby, pocketing $50 cash for Harriet and a $250 betting voucher for the men.
The novelty race sat among 10 trotting races at the annual event, which attracted an estimated crowd of almost 6000.
Free children's entertainment was provided and the race day also featured the increasingly popular Fashions on the Field event, contested by 29 people this year.
Lee Hoare, of Christchurch, won the event, Sharyn Payne, of Invercargill, was second and Phoebe Begg, of Dunedin, was third.
