In the rapid-fire twenty/20 competition, Otago will play its third game in six days when it takes on the Canterbury Wizards at QEII Park in Christchurch this afternoon.
Both teams have chalked up a win and a loss, with Otago losing by just one run to Central Districts at Pukekura Park in New Plymouth on Wednesday.
Canterbury lost by seven wickets to Wellington after the side from the capital easily got up to the target of 164 at the Basin Reserve.
Otago coach Mike Hesson said his side had bowled and fielded well against Central Districts but had failed to put together any sort of partnership and no-one had stayed at the crease for long enough.
He said the conditions at New Plymouth were overcast and dark and the ball moved around all day.
One of the top four batsmen had to take responsibility and occupy the crease but that did not happen, as wickets fell regularly.
Hesson said the side was lucky to get as close as it did.
Hesson would have to assess conditions at the ground before deciding on a final XI but said the squad had the luxury of carrying an extra pace bowler or could pick spinner Nick Beard, if needed.
Beard had impressed in the win against Northern Districts but was passed up for the game in New Plymouth in favour of a pace bowler.
The pitch in Christchurch had traditionally been a flat track and high scores might be in order.
Canterbury has to do without Craig McMillan again.
The former international, who has made himself available for the twenty/20 competition only, is nursing a calf strain and has yet to don the Canterbury colours.
Canterbury coach Bob Carter has brought in Australian Dean Brownlie and Jason Donnelly.
Canterbury will be captained by discarded international Peter Fulton, who took over from Kruger van Wyk last week, with Carter saying van Wyk wanted to concentrate on his wicket-keeping duties.
Afternoon showers are forecast for Christchurch today.
Otago will return home after today's game to play Wellington at the University Oval on Sunday.
