Five hundred expected for 2010 cavalcade

Registrations are already galloping in for the "Winding Road to Wanaka" cavalcade in February next year.

The Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust event will feature nine different trails, starting from different locations throughout Otago and South Canterbury, all arriving in Wanaka on Saturday, February 27.

Registrations opened recently and "they're romping in", co-ordinator Roberta Laraman said.

"The way things are shaping up, in the future we'll need to add another walking trail and another riding trail to cater for the demand."

This year, more than 460 people took part and next year Mrs Laraman expected the number to reach 500.

The event includes three walking trails, four riding, one heavy wagon and one light wagon trail.

"The inquiry has been from riders and walkers all over the world and all around this country."

A parade through the main street of Wanaka would mark the culmination of the cavalcade, and markets and a fair would be set up in Pembroke Park.

The hosts of the following four cavalcades have already been decided.

Oamaru will host the event in 2011, Cromwell in 2012, Naseby in 2013 and Tapanui in 2014.

"It's become so popular that we've got towns queuing up to host the cavalcade, so we decided to announce the venues five years in advance. Trail bosses will have lots of time to work out the various trails," she said.

Mrs Laraman has "retired" from the co-ordinator's role three times, but said the Wanaka event would "definitely" be her last and her successor would be named next year.
