Submissions are being sought on the Central Otago District Council's proposal to adopt metered charging for all connections to the Patearoa water supply.
Rural water users are allocated 1000 litres per day for each unit of water they are charged.
Users of the township supply are charged through rates for one unit (1000 litres per day), regardless of how much water they use, creating a potential for them to consume more water for the same charge.
The CODC's Long Term Council Community Plan proposal suggests metering would overcome the inequality experienced by water users in the Patearoa area.
A metered rate for the Patearoa township would be based on the volume of water supplied to all extraordinary users, at $1.25 per cubic metre, with non-rated units to be set at 311 units.
Submissions close on June 30.
