Shaky Bridge in Alexandra is closed for maintenance.
The suspension bridge over the Manuherikia River is used as a footbridge.
Its 13 transoms (beams under the walkway) are being replaced, as well as handrail balusters and some decking.
The Central Otago District Council project is estimated to cost about $44,000 and take three weeks.
To make the bridge more secure, decking will be screwed down rather than nailed, but the work will not alter the shaky character of the bridge.
While the bridge is closed pedestrians and cyclists will need to use a track leading to a nearby bridge.
Shaky Bridge opened for light traffic in 1879.
In 1951, the bridge was handed over to local authorities, when a committee raised $1800 to restore and open it in 1952.
