Clyde man charged with drunkenly shooting at dog

A middle-aged Clyde man has been charged with being intoxicated while in control of a firearm after he allegedly attempted to shoot a stray dog on his property late on Sunday.

Sergeant Ian Kerrisk, of Alexandra, said the man, whom police will not name, had been granted bail and would appear in the Alexandra District Court on May 6.

Sgt Kerrisk said police were called to a Sunderland St property about 10.50pm on Sunday by a group of people who noticed the man's actions when walking past his property.

"We received a call there was a man with a firearm in residential Clyde and, as a result, four armed officers from Alexandra and Omakau responded.

The gentleman was called out of his house and taken into custody without any problems," he said.

The man had allegedly found a stray male dog trying to mate with his female dog, and loaded a .223 firearm with the intention of shooting the stray.

The firearm was recovered by police from the address.

Sgt Kerrisk said the incident was resolved about 2am yesterday.
