Plenty of customers at the markets

Easter markets in Central Otago did a roaring trade throughout the long weekend, attracting hundreds of local residents and visitors alike.

Ranfurly hosted its twice-a-year Burn 729am Maniototo Markets on Saturday morning, at which home baking was a winning stall formula.

Pikelets, cakes, slices and biscuits sold well, as did hot sausages and cheese rolls on what was a chilly day.

An Easter raffle was also on offer, among art and craft stalls, miniature curling games, plant stalls and a stall selling fresh local honey, the stall featuring a display of bees working within a contained slab of honeycomb.

The markets coincided with an increased number of travellers on the Otago Central Rail Trail, making the most of an extended weekend to cycle the 150km tourist attraction.

Alexandra also benefited from the heavy throng of cyclists through the town, evident in the popularity of its own Easter market day on Saturday.

Stallholders from throughout Otago showed off their wares at Pioneer Park.

The Easter markets annually signal an end to market trading throughout the district ahead of winter.
