Intruder 'clearly came off second best'

An intruder got more than he bargained for when he broke into the house of ‘‘someone you wouldn't want to mess with'', police say.

Senior Sergeant Liz Waru, of Dunedin, said the man broke into the basement of a house in Dovecote Ave, Corstorphine, about 11.30pm on Monday.

The intruder was disturbed by an occupant of the house and confronted, Snr Sgt Waru said.

After hitting the occupant, the intruder was punched and fled from the house.

‘‘The offender took on the victim when clearly he wasn't someone you should have messed with and he clearly came off second best,'' Snr Sgt Waru said.

The 25-year-old victim was known to police, she said.

The offender was described as of solid build, and was wearing a dark-coloured hoodie with white writing and dark-coloured jeans.

Inquiries were continuing, Snr Sgt Waru said.
