A fire investigator was last night trying to ascertain the cause of a fire which engulfed a car in Upper Junction.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said the Willowbank crew initially responded to the fire in North Rd, near Cottle Rd, Upper Junction, with one truck attending about 4pm.

After a second call indicating the vehicle was part of a crash, a crew from the Dunedin station responded. However, on arrival it was found the car was not part of a crash.

Crews found a well-involved car fire. The fire was extinguished by 5.20pm and a fire investigator was at the scene last night trying to determine the cause of the blaze, the Fenz spokesman said.

A witness said the road was closed for some time and police were assisting with traffic.
