Roxburgh Community Pool is open for the summer, but with one major proviso.

Central Otago district councillor and pool committee member Sally Feinerman, of Roxburgh, said the pool was operating without a lifeguard, meaning anyone under the age of 18 needed to be supervised by someone over 18.

The rules applies to season pass holders, who can visit any time by using their keyfob, and casual swimmers, who are able to swim between the hours of 1pm to 5pm daily.

Swimmers have to sign a waiver saying they recognise the pool has no lifeguard.

Vesting the pool with the Central Otago District Council is being discussed as a part of the council’s long-term plan.

The proposal to vest the pool, which opened last year, with the council came after the Ida Macdonald Roxburgh Pool Punawai Ora committee could not attract committee members to run the pool or lifeguards.

If the pool was vested with the council they (the council) would be able to provide staff lifeguards and under-18s could visit unsupervised, Cr Feinerman said.

The pool has been the focus of decades of fundraising.
