Who knew there were 24 fit cricketers still left in the province?
The early part of Otago's summer has been dominated by storylines about injured or unavailable players.
But the Volts will hold a twenty20 trial at Brooklands Park tomorrow and a good turnout is expected, much to the relief of coach Nathan King.
He has been forced to draw some players from club cricket for Otago's first two Plunket Shield games.
The Volts opening twenty20 game is against Central Districts in New Plymouth on Thursday and the trial shapes as a good opportunity to put away the forward defensive and sharpen up on the slog sweep.
The list of triallists features the return of New Zealand A players Neil Wagner, Jacob Duffy, Michael Bracewell and Derek de Boorder.
They are all certainties for the opening game along with the captain, Nathan McCullum, Neil Broom, Brad Wilson, Sam Wells and, if fit, Anaru Kitchen.
That leaves two or three spots in the starting XI open.
Pace bowlers Jack Hunter and Michael Rae emerged from Otago's humbling 304-run defeat to Canterbury earlier this week with their reputations intact and will compete for a spot in the team.
The pair will have competition from Warren Barnes, who has recovered from ankle and back complaints.
There is probably room for only one of the three in the side.
Kitchen broke a bone in his hand during a net session in the pre-season.
He has the cast removed and will play in tomorrow's trial as a batsman only.
There are two other notable inclusions in the trial match - Namibia international Christi Viljoen and Kaikorai all-rounder Geordie Scott.
Viljoen is waiting for a working visa and is unavailable to play for Otago until it comes through.
''He is not available for selection but we still want to keep him involved because, when he does become available, there is a good chance he will play some cricket for us,'' King said.
Scott has been in outstanding form in club cricket. He is the competition's leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets at an average of 6.80 and the second-leading scorer with 137 runs at 45.67.
''He has been involved in the Otago A side so we're aware of his ability. And he has performed really well in club cricket so he deserves this opportunity.''
