The Clutha district has the dubious honour of leading the country in hotel and motel vacancies.
In the latest monthly report from Statistics New Zealand, Clutha takes last place for monthly occupancy rates among New Zealand regional tourism organisations, but Destination Clutha's Joanna Lowrey is pleased with the area's growth.
She said the Commercial Accommodation Monitor for December 2014 highlighted some positives for the tourism body, which came into existence last year.
Mrs Lowrey said for the past 12 months guest nights rose 7.7% to 80,386, 37% of visitors were international guests and the length of stay for visitors rose from 1.53 nights to 1.55.
The occupancy rate, while the lowest, rose from 20.3% to 21%.
She said it was good news for tourism operators the numbers were headed in the right direction and the organisation could now use the information to ''see what needs to be done''.
The occupancy rate excluded holiday parks.
