A police officer suffered a broken finger and another was allegedly bitten on the arm when an arrest escalated into violence in Dunedin.
The incident happened last night when police were called to Kensington Oval to find a man who had failed to appear in court.
When two officers found the 29-year-old he resisted arrest, Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said.
During the struggle he bit the female officer on the arm and broke one of the male officer's fingers, Sgt lee said.
Additional police were called in to assist and the man was pepper sprayed, Sgt Lee said.
He was charged with resisting police, grievous bodily harm, assault with intent to injure and threats to kill.
The man was remanded into police custody and would appear in Dunedin District Court today.
The bitten police officer and the officer with the broken finger both received medical treatment and finished their shifts, Sgt Lee said.
Last Friday, the same man was allegedly aggressive towards police at a property he had previously been trespassed from in Anzac Ave, Dunedin Central.
At 5.45pm, police were called that the man had continued to return to a carport area of a partially demolished building where he had been sleeping.
When police attempted to arrest the man, he became aggressive and resisted arrest.
He was eventually arrested and bailed to appear in court.
