Cricket: Scotland focusing on the basics today

Scotland will complete its tour of Australia and New Zealand with a match against Otago in Lincoln today. For Scotland captain Preston Mommsen, it is an opportunity to finish the New Zealand segment of the tour strongly.

''It looks like a decent Otago squad so it should be a good challenge for us,'' he said.

''It has been a decent week with us turning over the Firebirds [on Monday] and it is the last game of our tour, so we want to finish on a high and, hopefully, play some good cricket.''

The Scottish came painfully close to upsetting a useful New Zealand XI at Lincoln last week. No11 Alasdair Evans was run out scrambling to make his ground for a run that would have tied the game.

The team suffered a four-wicket lost to Canterbury two days later but rebounded on Monday with a 91-run win against Wellington.

Scotland also had a healthy win against Tasmania in Australia, so has a record of two wins from six games on its trip down under.

It is an experience Mommsen believes will prove invaluable when it returns for the World Cup in February next year.

''It has been a good learning curve for us and an opportunity to embrace different conditions. And, to be honest, I think we've done pretty well in that regard over the last six games.

''While we've only had two wins ... I think we've played some good cricket and for us the key is just to continue to maintain that for the entire 100 overs during the course of the game.''

The tourists should have plenty of quality intelligence on the strengths and weaknesses of the Volts' line-up. Scotland is coached by former New Zealand spinner and Northern Districts coach Grant Bradburn.

But regardless of how Otago plays, Scotland is focused on ''nailing down some of the basics''.

''I think we will be looking to do the same [today]. That is to be very good at our basic cricket skills and stay in the game for as long as we can and, hopefully, take away a win.

''It is going to be a challenge, of course, but we are up for it and are embracing it.''

Scotland is playing two Pool A World Cup games in Dunedin. Its opening game is against New Zealand at the University Oval on February 17 and its second is against fellow associate nation Afghanistan on February 26.

The latter is a crucial fixture for both teams. To get to the quarterfinals, teams will probably need three wins or more. Scotland's fixtures against Bangladesh and Afghanistan shape as its best opportunity but it will need to upset New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka or Australia.

Scotland has never won a World Cup game but only has to look to Ireland for inspiration. Ireland achieved a memorable win against Pakistan and England at the tournament.

''We 100% feel we can [make the quarterfinals]. We know it is not going to be easy. Scotland has never won a game at the World Cup previously. Just one win would be something special for this team.

''But we have a lot of talented individuals, so we are not setting ourselves any limitations and, hopefully, that sets us up to be in a position to maybe qualify for the next round.''
