Sarah Liu (centre) tutors Chng Mewtiang (left) and Jenni Coulter on the finer points of the art of Chinese calligraphy during celebrations by the Oamaru Chinese Association for the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival on Saturday night.

The festival is a celebration of the harvest in Chinese culture — also known as the Mooncake Festival or the Moon Festival.

Association president Janice Burnett said it was a time of inclusivity and hospitality, with a wide representation from across the North Otago community present for the pot-luck dinner.

Guests tucked in to traditional delights including roast duck, pork and chicken and the mooncakes specially supplied from Christchurch and traditionally eaten during the festival.

Live music, games and the traditional calligraphy demonstration by Ms Liu capped off the night.
