Cricket: Venue 'passed with flying colours'

Otago Cricket Association chief executive Ross Dykes believes there is no reason why Molyneux Park could not become a regular fixture on the domestic calendar again.

The popular venue hosted its first game of top-level cricket in almost three years yesterday and Dykes was thrilled with how the event went.

''I'm absolutely delighted with the day,'' he said.

''Everything about it was good. The Central Otago people supported it as well as we could have possibly hoped.

''It was a good pitch and the atmosphere was outstanding. And Otago capped it off with a pretty comprehensive win, so it couldn't be better.''

New Zealand Cricket stopped scheduling games at Molyneux Park because of concerns about the pitch. But under new groundsman Andrew Douglas, the playing surface has been brought up to scratch and Otago certainly had no problems batting on it.

The Volts dominated the match, restricting Auckland to 119 for nine and cruising to an eight-wicket win, thanks to a 99-run opening stand from Neil Broom (51) and Hamish Rutherford (49).

Officially the crowd was recorded at 2157 but a slight hiccup with the electronic ticketing meant some might have slipped in uncounted. The good news for the region is the Volts may return next summer.

''I think there is every chance,'' Dykes responded when asked if the venue would be allocated future games.

''This was a little bit of a test case, I suppose, and it passed with flying colours.

''I didn't see the first five overs, because I was on the gate, but I didn't see anything in the following overs to alarm me. I thought the pitch was reasonably even and true and I think our batsmen probably proved that to be the case.''
