The former Black Cap was the leading scorer in the Plunket Shield last summer, scoring 941 runs, including three centuries and six 50s.
He resumed on 69 yesterday and got through to 118 before retiring.
Otago reached 388 and at stumps Canterbury was 83 for none in reply.
Volts coach Vaughn Johnson was reasonably pleased with his side's performance.
''To get 380-odd was a good effort,'' he said.
''Our bowling started a bit loose but that is probably a hangover from India. We need to tighten up a little bit but I was generally happy with the day's play.''
The game had to be shifted from Mainpower Oval in Rangiora to Lincoln, after heavy rain earlier in the week left the surface unplayable.
Otago resumed on 110 for one. Michael Bracewell was bowled by Matt Henry without adding to his overnight score of 23.
Extended squad members Ryan Duffy (9) and Brad Rodden (7) would have been hoping to impress but both missed out.
Sam Wells joined Redmond at the wicket and got some valuable time in the middle, adding 36.
Iain Robertson (44) also made the most of his opportunity and Derek de Boorder scored 77 from 86 balls before retiring.
Last pair Nick Beard (28 not out) and Mark Craig (10) added 37 for the 10th wicket.
Henry and Logan van Beek picked up three wickets apiece.
