From working together to walking together, a father-daughter duo are among those taking part in today’s University of Otago graduation ceremony.

Orthopaedic surgeon and university professor David Gwynne-Jones will receive an MD, or doctor of medicine, while daughter Julia will receive an MBChB, or bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery.

His daughter had been working as his surgical assistant while completing her medical degree, Prof Gwynne-Jones said.

"She’s been helping me with hip and knee surgeries for the last three years."

Miss Gwynne-Jones will be the last of the family to obtain a medical degree, following in the footsteps of not only her father but also her mother Ulla Reymann and her older brother Robert Gwynne-Jones.

While they had not pushed their children to follow them into medicine, they were "very proud" of both of them, Prof Gwynne-Jones said.

His own graduation, based on 20 years of published research, had been delayed several times due to Covid, until eventually it was set for the same date as his daughter’s.

"I didn’t want to steal Julia’s thunder, but she’s happy with it."

Miss Gwynne-Jones said she was looking forward to celebrating the unusual occasion with a family dinner.

This would bring her six-year degree in a full circle, as she decided to study medicine after "lots of conversations around the dinner table" with her parents.

"I went into it seeing the best and worst from Mum and Dad."
